NOTICE:

All schedule 40 solid core pipe is not approved for installation on fuel fired appliances!

The water heater manufacturer has specified that solid core schedule 40 is an option, but the PVC manufacturers have stated that their standard PVC will fail if used as a gas vent. Standard schedule 40 PVC will breakdown at 140 degrees and the standard temperature for a gas water heater exhaust is 148 degrees. The gas vent pipe will be required to have UL 1738 stamped on it or the manufacturer will need to provide documentation that it is UL 1738 approved.  If you are providing documentation the pipe will need to bear the manufacturers mark that can be directly tied to the documentation. The exhaust pipe will be inspected during mechanical rough-in inspection to confirm it has been UL 1738 tested and approved.
